Limbe-Nansadi railway takes shape

UNDER REHABILITATION—Railway

Nacala Logistics has completed first phase of rehabilitation of the railway line between Limbe in Blantyre and Nansadi in Thyolo.

The works, which are being done by government and the consortium, aim at rehabilitating the line which was washed away by rains.

Nacala Logistics Master Civil Engineer Chrispin Kapalamula said the project will be implemented in three phases.

He said the second one is also at an advanced stage.

“For the third phase, we have now identified a contractor. Our plan is that by early June, the work on the ground should start depending on how fast we engage communities,” he said.

The second phase starts from Nansadi to Luchenza while the last phase starts from Luchenza to Sandama.

Kapalamula added that once the rehabilitation is complete, it will boost agricultural activities in surrounding areas.

“There are people who stay along the railway line who are farmers and are now struggling to transport their produce, a problem which will be eased once the works are complete,” he said.

The whole project is expected to cost $13 million once complete.
