Limbikani Mzava’s red card reversed
Malawi national football team skipper, Limbikani Mzava, is relieved after the South Africa Football Association (Safa) reversed the red card he received while playing for Golden Arrows in the Premier Soccer League over the weekend.
According to www. kickoff.com, Safa rescinded the decision after reviewing the incident, following a complaint from Arrows.
Mzava, in a telephone interview from South Africa before he departed for Blantyre yesterday, said he was happy with Safa’s ruling.
“I am at the airport coming there to join my colleagues, but my bosses at the club phoned me that the issue about the red card has been sorted out and I will be in action in our next match. However, I am not comfortable because we lost that game. Had it been that I finished the game, we could see something different,” he said.
Mzava is a key player for the Flames and Arrows.
The reversal of the red card will likely excite his club which is stuck on position 12 with 27 points in South Africa’s top-flight league.
Referee Thando Ndzandzeka erroneously cautioned Mzava for a second time, subsequently sending the player off during Arrows’ 2-1 Absa Premiership defeat to Orlando Pirates on Saturday evening.
However, Safa reviewed the incident and acknowledged the officials error, announcing that retrospective action has been taken.
“Mr Ndzandzeka wrongly showed the red card for two yellow cards to Arrows player, Mzava (shirt number five). The Arrows player, who was supposed to be shown the yellow card for a reckless challenge, is Mzwandile Buthelezi (shirt number three),” read a statement on the association’s website.
“Therefore, the red card shown to Mzava is rescinded on the basis of mistaken identity.”
Ndzandzeka has also written Safa, conceding his error.
Meanwhile, Mzava will captain the Flames in the forthcoming testing match against Uganda on March 27.
