Lions club donates assorted medical equipment to Qech

Lions Club of Blantyre yesterday donated assorted medical supplies worth about K475,000 to the Gogo Chatinkha Maternity Wing at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (Qech).

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Lions Club of Blantyre Secretary, Lion Abraham George, said the club was touched by the agony pregnant women were going through as they waited to have their sugar levels tested.

“We were touched with the lack of the equipment at the hospital. It is inconceivable that pregnant women can stay all day without food, waiting to be tested due to shortage of equipment,” he said.

George said the club made the donation in response to a plea for the equipment made by Jiya- Vannie Diabetic Foundation Executive Director, Ruth Walker.

Walker, who coordinated the donation, said as a diabetic person herself, she appreciates the pain diabetic pregnant women endure and says the donation will help them a lot.

Chief Nursing Officer at Queens, Lucy Chigwenembe, hailed the donation, saying it will help ease the pressure which was there for the equipment.

“Pregnant women were staying long hours without food as they waited to be tested for diabetes and other diseases. Some women were not being tested at all, so we will do whatever we can to protect them,” she said.

The donation was made courtesy of Pharmacare Pharmacies in Lilongwe and Octagon in Blantyre.
