Lions roar as Silver Strikers fall, Blue Eagles, Civil Service United win

For all the early promises in the Pamtsetse Nzika Football Bonanza, Silver Strikers were given a taste of their own medicine as they started the 2022/23 campaign on a low following a 1-0 defeat to Red Lions at Balaka Stadium Sunday.

Heading into the match, the Bankers were hoping to build on from their Pamtsetse Nzika Football Bonanza performance in which they defeated Blantyre giants Mighty Wanderers and Nyasa Big Bullets by 1-0 margins.

But they were given a reality check by the determined soldiers.

In the end, the Bankers, trooped out of Balaka Stadium crest fallen.

For the soldiers, it was mission accomplished as they bagged three points to kick start their campaign on a high as usual.

Royal Bokosi scored the lone goal to hand Lions victory.

Lions Coach Mike Kumanga was pleased with the performance of his players.

“The players showed great character throughout the match. This is a great win for the players and let teams underrate us at their own peril,” Kumanga said.

On his part, Silver Assistant Coach Macdonald Yobe conceded defeat.

“A bit disappointed with the result but it is part of the game. It was not our day,” Yobe said.

It was action parked weekend of football as there were several matches across the country on the second day of the TNM Super League season.

While Silver were mourning the defeat to Lions, their neighbours Civil Service United started the campaign on a high following a 2- 0 victory over rookies Sable Farming at Civo Stadium.

Christopher Kumwembe and Arnold Masamba were on target.

Elsewhere, Blue Eagles claimed a 1-0 victory over Mafco at Chitowe Stadium thanks to Auther Moffat’s goal.

At Mpira Stadium, Mighty Tigers defeated Moyale Barracks 1-0 courtesy of Kondwani Chilembwe’s goal.

Dedza Dynamos FC got the better of fellow rookies Rumphi United following a 2- 0 victory at Rumphi Stadium. Promise Kamwendo and Charles Chipala were on target for Dedza.

Kamuzu Barracks, who defeated Karonga United 3-1 on Saturday, lead the log table on goal difference with three points.

Civil are second followed by Ekwendeni Hammers. Both teams have the same number of goals and points.
