Listen to young people — Saulos Chilima

Vice President Saulos Chilima has urged stakeholders to listen to youth in the country in order to make Malawi a better place.

Chilima was speaking on Thursday in Mangochi when he made a key note address during a Rotary International District 2910 Regional Conference held at Nkopola Lodge, which attracted delegates from Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

The vice president said as a country, Malawi is committed to take care of the next generation through education and creating opportunities for the youth’s personal development. The initiatives include community colleges which intend to empower the young people.

“It is our shared responsibility, both government and Rotarians, to listen to our young people, nurture them, respond to their needs and empower them with the knowledge and skills to make our world a better place.

“In other words, we need to give them room to create their own universe. To properly prepare them for the future requires collaborative efforts between government and other stakeholders like you, Rotarians,” said Chilima.

He further commended the Rotarians for their recently introduced project on Ethics which the Rotary Club of Lilongwe is implementing with the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the Anti-Corruption Bureau in advancing ethical standards in Malawi.

Chilima said the issues of ethical standards and mindset change are of paramount importance to the government of Malawi because the country identified the need to bring back ethical standards in the public service and the country at large.

“We need to change our mindset if we are to successfully develop as a country. Mindset change is a vital ingredient in our journey to reforming the civil service,” he said.

In his remarks Rotary International Director Mike Webb urged Rotarians in the world to continue with the good work in order to be the difference in their societies.

“We encourage all Rotarians to continue doing the good work to benefit mankind. It is our hope that respective clubs will strive at growing membership in order to have a lot of people who will be of help to their society,” said Webb.
