Loans board boss, others arrested

Police on Thursday arrested Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) Executive Director Chris Chisoni and two other officials for alleged involvement in theft.
While confirming the arrest, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera refused to divulge more information.
“The issues are bordering on theft by persons employed in public service. I will not tell more about the case. I will be able to do so in the coming days,” he said.
However, Chisoni in 2018 was involved in a financial scandal when he was accused of misusing about K17 million in a deal pertaining to printing of diaries, calendars and other stationery, at a time a number of higher learning institution students were in need of financial support in the form of loans.
Kadadzera said the three are being kept at Lilongwe Police Station.
The board, apart from giving out loans, also recovers loans from former students who benefitted from government loans.
