Local firm proud of Must labs deliveries
A local construction firm has patted itself on the back for successfully executing a contract to install state-of-the-art laboratories at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) in Thyolo district
Blithe Construction Limited was contracted to convert five classrooms into three equipped and furnished laboratories. The company last week handed over the completed laboratory buildings to management at the university.
Blithe also fitted hostel furniture in 136 rooms at the university which enabled the college to accommodate the first intake in 2014.
Blithe’s contracts director, Patrick Khambadza, said the company had to ensure that the laboratories are of highest quality and durable because Must is an international standard facility which required top-notch expertise to match with the quality of its structures.
“The materials used were specifically manufactured for Must and no school in Malawi can match that quality,” said Khambadza.
He said the company engaged the best laboratory material manufactures in Malaysia, Italy and France while granite tops were procured from Zimbabwe.
His company, said Khambadza, secured financing from FDH Bank to enable it acquire and ship the materials into the country.
Khambadza said local companies should be given a chance and supported to do some of the jobs which are mainly contracted out to foreign companies.
Must Estates Manager, Charles Makamo, applauded Blithe for successfully executing the contract within 11 months as assigned.
“We are proud to have the state-of-art laboratories installed by a Malawian firm. Blithe has proven that local contractors can deliver just like foreign companies,” said Makamo.
