Local golf trainers hone skills
Zimbabwean golf instructor, Cath Riley, drilled 12 local golf coaches during a week-long training, which concluded over the weekend at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) hosted the course to develop the sport at grassroots.
Riley said Royal Ancient (R&A) has programmes to help African countries introduce the sport to aspiring young golfers “The coaches were eager to learn, and we hope very soon, Malawi will have good junior golfers. Throughout the week, the attendance was excellent and Malawi has talented golfers,” she said.
GOuM president, Frank Mvalo, said the union wants to build capacity for golf trainers.
“We have challenged the trainers to identify junior golfers within their communities, and show them to us as evidence that they have really imparted knowledge to the golfer. The junior development is the most crucial pillar when it comes to the development of any sport, so in golfing terms, we are focusing on juniors,” Mvalo said.
He added that through the course, the union expects a strong junior national team in the next two years.
Malawi national golf team assistant coach (South), Dingani Chirwa, said the course was important to the development of junior golf in the country.
“The course was intensive. We have learnt a lot of new things because golf is like technology, is changing every day,” Chirwa said.
Malawi hosted the course for the first time in five years.
