Locals aim for Puma Open gold

This year’s Puma Malawi Open Tennis championship concludes tomorrow with local players aiming for bigger stakes in the absence of foreign challengers.

The championship started on Wednesday at the Malawi National Tennis Centre located at Country Club Limbe, Blantyre.

Seasoned home top seeds, Julius Taulo and James Matewere, said they would not focus much on the absence of the foreigners.

“But, that does not mean that there are easy matches here. The level of competition is tough and to get to the finals, we will really sweat,” Taulo said.

Matewere, while admitting that international players could have added spark to the event, said locals were fighting tooth and nail to showcase their talent.

In the ladies section, Regina Dembo and Mary Luhanga are some top seeds rated highly to proceed to the paid rankings.

About 50 players are participating in the tournament split into men’s open, ladies open, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
