Loreen Ngwira signs for UK team
Malawi national netball team and Tigresses’ all-rounder, Loreen Ngwira, has agreed to join United Kingdom (UK) netball team, Northumbria, on a season-long deal.
“We would like to welcome Malawi Queens’ shooter-defender Loreen Ngwira to the squad in replacement of injured Tuaine Keenan,” Northumbria tweeted on Tuesday.
Ngwira’s English agent, Natalie Swift, said she did not have more details on the player’s transfer.
Ngwira was not readily available for her comment.
Tigresses Team Manager, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, said they were surprised to learn that Northumbria had announced Ngwira’s signing before the two parties could reach an agreement.
“We have just seen the news on twitter but the club is yet to contact us. They haven’t made any offer. We won’t comment much because they have been talking directly to the player,” Mpinganjira- Tasosa said.
Netball Association of Malawi General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said they also learnt about Ngwira’s transfer through twitter.
“We just hope that they will follow transfer procedures. Nevertheless, the deal is good for the nation because the exposure she will gain will add value to Malawi national netball team,” she said.
Northumbria is the Netball Superleague franchise of Northumbria University, and is the only Superleague netball team in the North East.
Northumbria compete in the 10-team top-flight’ tier of UK netball.
Ngwira has followed in the footsteps of compatriots, Mwawi Kumwenda, who plays for Melbourne Vixens in Australia and Joyce Mvula of Manchester Thunder in the UK.
