Loveness Gondwe from Chitipa District emerged champion of the 2022 Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) National Ladies Singles Tournament after beating Ester Kazembe 7-3 at Capital City Motel in Lilongwe on Saturday.
She was in aclass of her own as she mesmerised the crowd with asolid display.
Calm and composed, Gondwe was simply the best out of the eight ladies who qualified for the national finals.
However, Kazembe gave Gondwe a tough run for her money.
For winning the tournament, Gondwe received K1.2 million plus a trophy whereas Kazembe got K800,000.
In her victory speech, Gondwe said she prepared well for the tournament.
“It is a dream come true to win the tournament. I knew that I would win it,” Gondwe said.
Last year’s winner, Lucy Vinkhumbo, finished on position three after beating Blessings Phiri 6-3 in the third place play-off.
Deputy Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Kinnah Phiri said he was pleased with the level of competition during the finals.
“As government, we are committed to developing all sporting codes in the country. We are on track to ensure that ladies take part in various sporting disciplines,” Phiri said.
Mapa Vice Chairperson Hastings Mpesi said this year’s tournament was a success.
“The tournament has unearthed new players. We want to take the game of pool to the next level,” Mpesi said.
