Water is an important natural resource but access to it remains a challenge in the country, the government has acknowledged.
However, Labour Deputy Minister Vera Kamtukule—who represented Natural Resources Minister Nancy Tembo during the opening of the Water Services Association of Malawi (Wasama) annual lakeshore conference in Mangochi Wednesday— said the task of bringing potable water to people was not the government’s alone.
“It is unfortunate that the majority of Malawians cannot access potable water and, yet, we have abundant sources of water in the country,” she said.
“People attending conferences should be coming up with concrete solutions not just mere talk. As professionals, it is your duty to make sure that you are clearing the challenges which are limiting access to social services among Malawians,” Kamtukule added.
Wasama President Robert Hanjahanja pledged to help the government meet its water access goals.
“We are here to find solutions to problems,” he said.
