The Ministry of Health has said it is worried with the slow uptake of Covid vaccines, despite the pickup in numbers of people testing positive for coronavirus.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe said Wednesday that the only time the country registered an increase in Covid vaccination cases was during the first phase of the campaign.

He said, during the time, about 700,000 doses were administered.

He, however, said this has not been the case during the second phase.

“We, as a ministry, have tried several campaigns and measures to make sure that people get vaccinated but our efforts have faced resistance. As we speak, we have all vaccines in store but people are not willing to get vaccinated,” Chikumbe said.

Health rights advocate Maziko Matemba described the situation as worrisome.

“Covid is a deadly disease,” he said, adding that it is high time every Malawian who has no justifiable reason for shunning inoculation got vaccinated.

“We have seen that the number of people testing positive for coronavirus has started increasing. That should be a clear sign that something is not working.

“Most of the people who tested positive for coronavirus have never been vaccinated. Let faith leaders, traditional leaders and everyone else help in the Covid vaccination campaign,” Matemba said.

On Tuesday, Malawi registered 38 Covid cases, 31 new recoveries and zero deaths.
