Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has appointed its Chief Whip in Parliament, Lobin Lowe, as Leader of Opposition.
The Lilongwe Central Member of Parliament (MP) replaces MCP president, Lazarus Chakwera, who resigned from the position before submitting presidential nomination forms to Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) earlier this month.
MCP spokesperson, Maurice Munthali, Wednesday said the appointment of Lowe followed an endorsement by the party’s MPs.
“Yes, honourab le Lowe has been appointed to the position between now and when Parliament dissolves. This follows the resignation of Dr Chakwera as member of Parliament and Leader of Opposition. The parliamentarians appointed Lowe at a caucus,” he said.
Munthali said MCP has a l so appointed Mzimba Solola MP, Jacob Hara, as Chief Whip while Clement Mlombwa remains Deputy Chief Whip.
Parliament meets from March 5 to 18 2019 before it is dissolved on March 20.
