Luanar hosts Umssa Games on Saturday

University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (Umssa) will host its annual Inter-College Staff Games at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) Bunda Campus on Saturday.

University of Malawi staff from Chancellor College, The Polytechnic, College of Medicine, Luanar and Kamuzu College of Nursing will participate in the games’ second edition this year.

The staff would complete in different sports disciplines, including football, volleyball, netball, darts and bawo, Umssa general secretary, Herbert Mpando, said.

This year’s games, he noted, were significant because they would give Umssa a platform to prepare for the Southern Africa Universities Staff Sports Association (Saussa) Games to be held at the University of Swaziland in December, 2015.

Mpando said Umssa was eager to impress during its eighth participation at the Saussa games.

He also said the games had a social impact on the participants.

“The association was formed to help in fostering existing friendly relations among members of staff of constituent colleges by encouraging sports at all levels. In addition, Umssa, through sports, encourages interaction with other members,” Mpando explained.

Mpando added that the games at Bunda would be spiced up by a cultural night, where colleges would demonstrate various traditional dances.

“We expect to have a great day of sports and interaction. We are very grateful to the management of the Unima and Luanar for their continued support during these games,” he said.
