Karonga–based group – Lusubilo Band was one of the best local acts at the Lake of Stars Festival held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi despite performing on Sunday which was the last day.
The group, which was put together by Professor Agnes Kim through her Lusubilo Music Centre, proved they are one of the bands of the future. They impressed with their act cemented by their energetic dancing.
And just like Zimbabwe’s Mokoomba which conquered on Saturday, Lusubilo also shined with their act which kept the audience entertained throughout and no wonder when they bowed out, people called for more.
But being a festival, they were only given a chance of playing one song and so they satisfied the people offering a popular folklore song titled ‘Kachitsa.’
Apart from the energy they showed during their performance, Lusubilo which last year toured South Korea, offered mature and rich sound fused with traditional dances such as Mwinoghe, which is one of the popular traditional dances from Karonga.
Some of their songs are in Khonde language but through the sound, people were able to appreciate their talent.
“I am impressed, I have loved this group from the word go. I will not be surprised when I see this group making it big outside the country. They have everything in them and these are the groups to support,” said Samuel Mwale, who is based in South Africa and exhibited her works at the festival.
Mwale has also been in the forefront bringing local artists in South Africa for performances.
Renowned writer Shadreck Chikoti, who conducted a writing session at the festival with colleagues on Sunday, also said he was impressed with Lusubilo.
Mokoomba Band’s lead guitarist and backing vocalist Trustworth Samende also heaped praise at Lusubilo and encouraged them to stick together.
Lusubilo is a group whose producer is musician and teacher Tiwonge Hango who announced during the festival that the group will next year perform in Germany.
They won the Chibuku Road to Fame Music competition in the second year and have an album to their credit titled Afrika Inuka.
