Football Association of Malawi (Fam) says it will engage property valuers to assess the damage at Luwinga Technical Centre which was burnt down by angry Mzuzu residents on Saturday.
“It is too early to say how much we have lost because we need proper assessment of the facility. From the preliminary findings we have lost several items but it is difficult to come up with the exact figure, we have engaged police to beefed up security,” Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda said Sunday.
Fam offered the facility to Ministry of Health to be used as a quarantine centre for patients suffering from Covid-19 but angry residents descended on the facility and vandalised it.
The damaged properties included beds and mattresses.
Fam regional coordinator for North, Robert Mziza, Fam second vice president, Othaniel Hara and officials from the Ministry of Health said they were still assessing the damages.
Fam constructed Luwinga Technical Centre with funding from Fifa Goal Project to develop the game of football.
The association said the establishment of the Football Academy at Luwinga Technical Centre is among the priorities in the 2020 budget.
