Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) has said it postponed elections of its subcommittee, the National Professional Boxing Committee, because of few applicants.
Maba was supposed to hold the elections last weekend but postponed the elections to next month.
The association’s President, Justice Katika, said changing polls dates would give interested candidates more time to apply.
“We should not elect officials for the sake of it. We need to elect officials that are committed and willing. We felt we should extend the period to give others ample time to participate,” he said.
Katika said a new date of elections would be released by this weekend after Maba executive meeting.
“We need to review the process as well as see if the interested candidates have all the requirements we need. Besides that, we need to check whether they are not affiliated to rival camps,” he said.
Recently, former Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) general Secretary, Daudi Chikwanje, expressed interest to vie for a postion of Chairperson in Maba’s National Professional Boxing Committee.
Chikwanje, who was suspended at MPBCB for being critical to the administration, said he had the knowledge and skills to promote professional boxing at Maba.
“I am a qualified and seasoned sports administrator. I have a strategic work plan that will help develop professional boxing in tandem with Aiba rules and regulations,” he said.
Chikwanje said he was looking forward to contributing to the development of boxing.
