Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) has trimmed its squad to three from six ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifying championship slated for Senegal.

Yamikani Ntambo (featherweight-57 kgs), Harvey Mkacha not the footballer, (super lightweight-63 kgs) and Snowden Munyanje (super welterweight-69kgs) have been selected to represent the country during the Olympic qualifiers set to start on February 17.

Maba President, Pyson Likagwa, cited lack of funds as the reason which has forced the association to pick only three boxers.

“All the six boxers are currently in camp. In the meantime, we have selected top three boxers to compete at the qualifiers. If we get support from well-wishers then we will include the remaining boxers in the squad,” he said.

Trainer, Andy Muyaya, said he would have loved if all the six boxers had travelled for the qualifiers to boost their chances of qualifying for this year’s Olympics.

“Our squad is too lean. It would have been an added advantage to have a full squad competing at the qualifiers to increase our chances of realising our dream,” he said.

Nevertheless, Muyaya said he was impressed with the boxers that have been earmarked to compete at the qualifiers.

“They have been doing well. We are still fine tuning them,” he said.

Recently, the boxers underwent a week-long international camp in Zambia.
