Machuluka enjoys space with Tonga songs
Machuluka is a name that might not be strange, especially to those who have sampled the Tonga track ‘Zowala Za Mwana Wangu’.
‘Zowala Za Mwana Wangu’ is a song which continues to enjoy airplay, especially in weddings and engagements.
Machuluka, real name Andrew Mphande, said on Monday that he is working on an album titled Mungavwa Waka Mbiri to come out August.
“I have been working very hard and I am happy with the response I have received from people. Some of them have encouraged me to continue using my Tonga language since music knows no boundaries,” he said.
So far, the artist has managed to record eight songs with the latest ‘Awakoliyapu’, which has also received an overwhelming response.
“I know some people have been asking me as to why I have concentrated much on doing Tonga songs but this is also part of promoting my language but again I have seen that I do better songs in my own language. There are artists like Diamond, who do their songs in Swahili, so it’s the same with me,” Machuluka said.
Of the eight songs he has recorded, only one is in English titled ‘Homesick’, while the rest are in Tonga.
The other songs are ‘Mwakambanga Boza’, ‘Wandiphwamuwa’, ‘M’bali Wangu’, ‘Ndituza’, and ‘Vwalako’.
Machuluka, who is currently studying business information technology at the National College of Information Technology – Lilongwe Campus, describes himself as a composer, writer and producer.
“Actually, all these songs I have produced on my own at Machuluka Records. I believe in myself and I am not afraid to take chances but also embrace new things. And for your information, I am also a painter and sketch artist,” Machuluka said.
His music career dates back to the time he was a child when with friends they used to make instruments from tins, pieces of wire and wood.
“I developed a strong interest in playing instruments after I took my Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations. The first instrument I learnt was the guitar,” he said.
Machuluka said some of the songs in the album were done long time ago but he is refining them.
