Macra, Escom directors arrested

Police have arrested Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra)’s Director of Finance Ben Chitsonga and Procurement Specialist Joseph Ngalawa, as well as Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom)’s Director of Human Resources and Administration, Daphter Namadwa.
The two seniors from Macra were arrested for allegedly buying Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) cloth worth K100 million while Namadwa has been arrested in connection to the lost millions of litres of fuel at Escom.
The three were all arrested Friday.
Two sources from Macra, who opted for anonymity, confirmed the arrests of the two officials in connection with the purchase of the former ruling party’s party cloth.
“It is true that they have been arrested. They have been implicated in the purchase of party cloths worth K100 million,” one source said.
National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera asked for more time to find out details on the arrests.
However, some of our sources within the police service confirmed the arrest of Namandwa.
According to the sources, Namandwa is at Blantyre Police Station on remand.
The source corroborated our findings that the arrest is in connection to the issue of fuel that was being drawn from Escom in the past years.
Prior to the June 23, 2020 Fresh Presidential Elections, Namadwa went missing for close to a week and his car was found abandoned in Mulanje District, close to a road leading to Mulanje Mission Hospital.
He was apparently found wandering within the district by a kabaza taxi person.
Some reports on social media had alleged that he went missing after refusing to award contracts to some top officials in the previous administration.
