Macra tightens cyber security

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has said it is sealing cyber security loopholes through the newly established Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert).

Cert Manager, Christopher Banda told journalists on Monday that establishment of the unit is provided for in the Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act of 2016.

“The Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security mandates Macra to establish this unit to protect critical information structure and also to be a coordination point for cyber security in Malawi.

“This is at the top level and under this there is cyber-crime, cyber war and elements for which we work with all the stakeholders including security agents like police and the army,” Banda said.

He said cyber security comes handy when critical information infrastructures are attacked say by Malware.

“When such infrastructures are attacked by Malware, for example, we coordinate with all the stakeholders to ensure that those standards are upheld, and the services are not disturbed,” he said.

Banda said cyber security threats do not always arise within the country.
