Lilongwe-based , the duo of Yosefe Kalekeni and Yobu Maligwa has been invited to performe for Womex – Worldwide Music Expo later this month.
With Covid-19 pandemic, Womex will take place virtually with groups from different countries recording their performances.
Madalitso Band took advantage of a live stream concert they held at Mbowe in Lilongwe last Saturday to shoot a performance for Womex.
The group is little known in the country but it has built itself a brand outside the country having had a number of performances in international festivals.
Manager of the group Neil Nayar, who has travelled with them in their European tours, said Tuesday they were happy to star for Womex which is one of the biggest events in the world.
“Last year, we were part of World of Music, Arts and Dance (Womad), but Womex is different and it is one of the biggest gigs we have been booked for. We are excited.
“The live stream concert at Mbowe was good, we managed to generate money.
The public enjoyed it and we will try to do more. We were happy to show the streets because that’s where Madalitso Band performs. We showed the reality of what it is like playing in the streets,” he said.
Nayar said people will also experience something unique during Womex.
“So it’s the same street performance, the sound is beautiful with the audience brought in,” he said.
The group which is looking forward to tour in 2021 recently was also part of the third online festival known as Intercity Live. The broadcast of the festival took place on YouTube channel of popular Ukrainian show Television Toronto.
Womex is an international world music support and development project based in Berlin, Germany whose main event is an exposition held annually in different locations throughout Europe.
The event integrates a trade fair, showcases, conferences, film screenings, networking sessions, and awards. Musicians and their labels have the possibility to make contacts for international touring and album distribution.
For 2009-2011, Womex was hosted in Copenhagen, Denmark in a new partnership with WorldMusicFair Copenhagen.
Womex 2020 will be held in Budapest, Hungary from October 21-25, 2020.
The event runs during October every year, and in many cases, during the last October weekend.
“For Womex our day is October 22nd. So on this day, the Womex delegates will be encouraged to check out our video that we filmed at Mbowe in Lilongwe. We also did an interview with a really cool guy from USA. There is just a single 15 minute virtual performance from all the artists of Womex,” Nayar said.
