Madalitso connects with Ukrainian Band

Lilongwe-based group – Madalitso Band is reaping fruits of their Europe tour as it has clinched a deal collaborate with Tik Tu Band from Ukraine.

The move also comes barely a month after the group participated in an online festival in Ukraine.

Madalitso Band is the duo of Yosefe Kalekeni and Yobu Maligwa, who are based in Mtandire in Lilongwe.

The band’s co-manager Neil Nayar said Monday the song titled ‘Sitimamenya’ is now ready and that it will be released on Friday.

The video of the song will be live on YouTube from Tik Tu’s channel.

The song will also be available on all streaming platforms from Spotify to Tidal as well as for downloads with the proceeds going directly to the artists.

“In May, Madalitso Band received an email from Tik Tu Band of Ukraine, who said they love their music. They said the music was joyful and uplifting before an idea to collaborate came in,” Nayar said.

With the band failing to go on an international tour due to Covid-19 pandemic, Madalitso Band managed to record a song with the Ukrainian band, which according to Nayar, added extra vocals as well as some plucked violin, bass and modern synth sound.

Nayar said the idea by Tik Tu was to add to the song their vibes but keep it as Madalitso track.

“It is very beautiful to hear Ukrainian vocalists singing in Chichewa,” Nayar, who manages Madalitso Band with Emmanuel Kamwenje, said.

Lesik Omodada of Shypytal Records and Tik Tu, who mixed the song, said everything just fell in place for the track.

“Tik Tu were thrilled with the result just as Madalitso,” Omodada said.

The video production took place mostly in Malawi by Satellite Entertainment.

“Tik Tu shot their scenes with a green screen and other outdoor shots and sent to Malawi. Madalitso shot some scenes during recording and others out on the streets. Music Crossroads Malawi Hear Us Children brought some traditional dances to the stage,” Nayar said.

The song ‘Sitimamenya’ talks about advising children who have done something wrong, without getting physical.

The song is not the usual driven style of Madalitso’s music but it takes an influence from most popular musical styles in the country such as reggae.
