The High Court has given a go ahead to US pop star Madonna, whose real name is Louise Ciccone, to adopt two more Malawian children.

High Court Judge Fiona Mwale granted Madonna the adoption order on Tuesday after hearing the matter on January 25 2017.

The adoption of the four-year-old twin-girls follows the adoption of two other Malawian children, David Banda and Mercy James in 2006 and 2009, respectively.

Judiciary Spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula, said a number of factors were considered when granting the order.

“The court, for instance, looked at the importance of family integrity. It also looked at the health, safety and protection of the children. The court also considered the absence of violence or criminal activities in the home,” Mvula said.

Other factors, he said, the court considered were the assurance that the children shall be given care, treatment and guidance and that Madonna will assist them in developing into self-sufficient adults.

Another factor which was taken into consideration was Madonna’s age. Mvula said Madonna met the age requirement of 25 years and above to adopt children, according to the country’s adoption law.

Madonna was born on August 16 1958.

According to Mvula, the twin’s father and their maternal uncles were also present when the judgement on the application was being made.

Mvula said the twins were born on August 24 2012 but their mother died on August 29 2012 from caesarian section complications a week after delivery.

The Daily Times has established that the US pop singer was at the High Court by half past eight in the morning to hear the judgement.

She left the court around half past nine in a Toyota Hilux amid tight security at the court premises.

Some security officers tussled with The Daily Times journalists as they tried to gather facts about Madonna’s presence at the court.

Others tussled with Times cameraman, Douglas Banda, as he tried to get footage of what was happening at the court.
