Madonna wants to adopt Malawian twins
US pop star, Madonna, whose real name is Louise Ciccone, on Wednesday morning went to the High Court in Lilongwe, where she filed application to adopt two Malawian children.
The children, both girls, are twins.
Madonna, who arrived at the court around 8 O’clock in the morning, went straight to the chambers of Judge Fiona Mwale, who is handling the matter.
There was tight security at the court, with some people saying taking of pictures was not allowed.
There was, however, no official communication from the court on the issue and some journalists who were already at the court to cover other cases just went to the High Court building waiting for Madonna to come out.
After close to one and half hours in Judge Mwale’s chambers, she quickly boarded a white Kia Sportage which was parked outside the door which judges use.
Two people, carrying the children joined her in the vehicle, before it quickly left the court premises.
According to judiciary spokesperson, Mlenga Mvula, the application was made through lawyer Titus Mvalo.
He, however, said Judge Mwale has reserved her ruling on the application.
Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare spokesperson Lucy Bandazi also confirmed Madonna’s interest.
“Madonna has expressed interest to adopt two children, both female. They are twins, aged four years. As a ministry, we need to conduct thorough inquiries on the children regarding their circumstances,” Bandazi said.
Madonna has in the past adopted two Malawian children: David Banda and Mercy James. Banda was adopted in 2006 while James was adopted in 2009.
