Mafco excited with Richard Mbulu’s return

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side Mafco has expressed happiness with the return of striker Richard Mbulu, who spent years playing for Mozambican and South African clubs.

Mbulu has gone back to Mafco after his relegated South Africa DStv Premiership side Baroka FC decided against renewing his contract.

He later attended trials at Zambia MTN Super League side Zesco United, where he failed to impress.

Mafco General Secretary Mike Uzale said the soldiers are excited with Mbulu’s return.

“We are very happy to see Mbulu back at our training base. We did our best to clear him and we are grateful to Fam [Football Association of Malawi] for helping us. This will help us sharpen our frontline in the remaining games. We expect Mbulu’s return to stiffen competition for places among our strikers.

“The going is quite tough in the Super League now and his experience and expertise will be of great value to us. As a club, we are happy to welcome him back. As for when he will make his first appearance in our colours, the coach will decide,” Uzale said.

Mbulu was also reported to have joined Iraqi side Al Najaf but the move did not materialise as MDF declined to give him the greenlight, citing failure to follow the right procedures.

MDF advised Mbulu to resign if he indeed wanted the move to go through.

The forceful forward eventually relented and returned to the Salima-based side, which did not waste time in pushing for his clearance.

In the course of the week, Fam announced that Mbulu is free to start playing for Mafco this weekend.

The 2016 TNM Super League golden boot award winner could make his return tomorrow during Mafco’s match against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Mbulu scored the lone goal which enabled Malawi to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals in a 1-0 win over Uganda.

In other matches scheduled for tomorrow, Moyale will host Rumphi United at Mzuzu Stadium while Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles will lock horns at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

On Sunday, leaders and defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets host Civil Service United at Kamuzu Stadium whereas Ekwendeni Hammers and Karonga United will clash at Mzuzu Stadium.

Sable Farming will be in action against Kamuzu Barracks at Mpira Stadium while Dedza Dynamos and Mighty Tigers will meet at Dedza Stadium.
