TNM Super League returnees Mafco have finished the 2019 season with 103 points after a 1-1 draw with Dedza Dynamos at Salima Community Centre Ground on Tuesday.

Mafco came from behind to collect a point from the match after winning six consecutive games to lift the title with seven points above second-placed Airborne Rangers.

The Salima-based soldiers’ Coach Stereo Gondwe, said it was good that they were back to where they belonged.

“We are a very good team and we will prove it in the Super League. We thank the players for working hard throughout the season,” Gondwe said.

Speaking during the symbolic presentation ceremony of the trophy to Mafco, Football Association of Malawi executive member, Rashid Ntelera, advised the champions to prepare well for their return to the top flight league so that they avoid relegation.

“It was not easy for you to return to the Super League because other teams were also equally good. You should prove that your promotion is not a fluke by maintaining your place in the league,” Ntelera said.

Central Region Football Association (CRFA) Chairperson, Austin Ajawa, also graced the occasion alongside officials from sponsor Chipiku Stores.

Ajawa said it was sad that three teams from the region got relegated from the elite league in the just ended season.

However, Ajawa described the regional league as one of the best in the 2019 season.

“It was one of the most exciting seasons ever. We watched quality football from all our teams but there can only be one winner and that is Mafco. We believe there will be more excitement in the 2020 season,” he said.

Mafco earned a quick return to the Super League after just a season in the lower league.

In the Southern Region, Red Lions also returned after finishing the season as champions of the Thumbs Up Southern Region Football League Premier Division whereas Ekwendeni United made it from the Simso Northern Region Football League.
