Tuesday, the place was deserted and all there was were interlocking bricks, a mound of sand and quarry mixer which were unattended to.
People who conduct their businesses near the site said the contractor left and had not been seen for slightly over a week.
Reports that the construction of the statue had been stopped started making rounds on Monday but Blantyre City Council spokesperson Anthony Kasunda declined to comment on the matter saying all the council did was to provide land for the project but all the works are been coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian High Commission.
Spokesperson in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rejoice Shumba said the ministry could not know the recent development on the work as it is being coordinated by the Ministry of Local Government through Blantyre City Council.
“It is news to me that the construction Project have stopped. Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not managing the construction works so I cannot know if they indeed stopped,” she said.
Construction of the statue has attracted criticism from some citizens who argue that Gandhi did not contribute in the development of Malawi to deserve a statue erected in his honour.
Former vice president Cassim Chilumpha publicly spoke against the erection of the statue. There is a petition circulating online against the construction of the statue.
