The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) will start dragging to court suppliers of products and services that do not meet standards, MBS Director General, Devline Chokazinga, has said.

MBS has said, despite consistently confiscating sub-standard products on the market, some unscrupulous suppliers continue to sell such goods.

“We will intensify market surveillance activities across the country to curb the presence of substandard products on the market. The penalties will include confiscation of substandard products and imposition of default charges,” Chokazinga said.

The State-funded quality products regulatory body furher said it would impose punitive measures on anyone found producing, selling or distributing uncertified or sub-standard products on the market.

Chokazinga issued the warning in Mzuzu City, where the bureau presented certificates to 13 local service producers who have met the bureau’s standards.

He said MBS would take action on illegal weights and measures used in trade in order to promote fair trade between buyers and sellers.

“We are urged, therefore, to report these unscrupulous traders to MBS or the police for appropriate action to be taken on them. I again advise all people in the country to desist from consuming products and services that are not certified.

‘’People should take caution by making sure that they purchase products that bear our MBS quality mark or certification to avoid purchasing sub-standard products and services,” Chokazinga said.

One of the recipients of the 2018 MBS certificates, Grand Palace Hotel, said provision of quality services is a legal requirement for all service providers Grand Palace Hotel General Manager, Francis Saliya, said the hotel will strive to make sure that it maintains high standards through the recognition from MBS.

“We are happy that we provide high quality standards and we are happy that Malawi has acknowledged our efforts in ensuring high quality standards. We, as a hotel, do internal inspection to promote quality,” Saliya said.

MBS has, this year, offered 95 certificates to products and service providers who met bureau’s standard.
