Malawi College of Medicine (CoM) is celebrating silver jubilee under a theme: Excellence yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The celebrations which will be held for a whole week started yesterday with a memorial ceremony of late Professor John Chiphangwi who was the first principal of the college. The ceremony took place at his home village in Thyolo.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, CoM Principal, Mwapatsa Mipando, said the theme is coming from the fact that the school started operating with 12 students and over the years the number of students has increased to about 700.
“This week, students will not have classes because we had already worked out a plan to have this week free during the time we were forming the school calendar. Without any doubt, we are proud to say celebrating 25 years of excellence since we started existing is no mean achievement. We are certain about this because we serve all Malawians with our well-trained students who graduate to be medical doctors, pharmacists and many others,” Mipando said.
He said the celebrations symbolise a great stepping stone by the college and about K40 million will be spent.
“The celebrations have been categorised in phases from Sunday the 4 to Saturday 10 September. During the celebrations, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Fabiano, and Minister of Health, Peter Kumpalume, will grace some of the activities,” he said.
Some of the activities to be carried out during the celebration week include research open day, research dissemination conference, alumni day and a banquet.
