Malawi Cricket Union eyes foreign tournaments

By Mphatso Malidadi:

Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) has revealed plans for men’s and ladies’ national teams to compete in international competitions this year to improve their world rankings.

MCU Services and Logistics Officer, Patricia Kapesa, said the ladies’ team has been earmarked to take part in the Botswana Cricket Association Ladies tournament in August, with the men’s side competing in the Africa Cricket T20 Cup in Nairobi, Kenya, at a date to be announced later.

“We are currently consulting stakeholders for funding that will cater for both events. Competing in such tournaments will help our players to gain exposure and improve our game,” Kapesa said.

She said both the men’s and ladies’ sides were capable of leaving a mark in the two competitions if well supported.

“We want to be in the top 20 by the end of the year. We can achieve this by participating and impressing in international competitions,” Kapesa said.

She said MCU was staging tournaments in readiness for this year’s league games.

“We have not started our league games but we are having local competitions in categories such as 6-aside, 8-aside and T20 for both women and men. These competitions are crucial in the sense that they act as platforms from which the coach to choose players for national team camp,” Kapesa said.

Last year, Malawi women’s national cricket team took part in the African Cricket Region Five championship whereas the men’s side competed in the International Cricket Council Region C T20 and African Cricket Association qualifiers.

The men’s side finished second in the continental championship and fifth in T20.
