Malawi Defence Force boxers suffer setback

Boxers Chrispin Moliyati and Wilson Masamba’s trip to Tanzania for fights hangs in the balance as the pair is yet to be cleared by their employer, the Malawi Defence Force.

Moliyati is expected to face Cosmas Cheka in a Universal Boxing Organisation lightweight fight. Masamba is supposed to take on Jonas Segu in a non-title featherweight fight.

The pair, alongside other boxers Mussa Ajibu, Eneles Nkhwanti and Alick Gogodo, was expected to leave on Monday for Tanzania, but failed due to the lack of the clearance.

Ajibu, Gogodo, Nkhwanti and matchmaker Steve Mawenzi Msiska eventually left the country yesterday. They will be joined in Tanzania by No Pain No Gain Boxing Promotions Managing Director, Craig Rousseau.

“We are still hoping that the pair might be cleared to travel. The bill is on Saturday night and if the boxers are cleared by Wednesday, then chances of fighting will be there. The weigh-in is set for Friday. We are keeping our fingers crossed,” he said.

Nkhwanti will take on Lulu Kayange in a bantamweight fight with Mussa dating Mtumi ya Tumbo in a light heavyweight category, whereas Gogodo will face Ashilaf Selemani in a heavyweight battle.

Kamuzu Barracks Boxing Club Vice-Team Manager, Sergeant William Kaliayinga, said they were still pushing for the clearance of the duo.

Moliyati, who recently defeated rival Salimu Chazama to lift the national lightweight belt, said it was frustrating not to travel to Tanzania, having also missed a chance to vie for International Boxing

Federation-Africa lightweight title fight in Namibia recently on similar grounds.

“Time is ripe for promoters and matchmakers to speed up the process with our bosses. In the army there is discipline and there is no shortcut,” he said.

Masamba, who last time lost in Namibia in the first round, said they were only hoping that the clearance would be issued.
