Malawi Defence Force (MDF) has promised to award its stand-out performers during a gala scheduled for next month in Lilongwe.

MDF spokesperson Wilned Chawinga said this on Friday when asked about Army Commander Griffin Supuni Phiri’s pledge to, in a special way, recognise Kamuzu Barracks’ (KB) achievement after winning their first-ever TNM Super League championship in the 2015/16 season.

“Apart from recognising the achievements of Kamuzu Barracks Football Club, the Malawi Defence Force is organising a sports gala where it will honour all its athletes, who have excelled in various sporting disciplines in the past year,” Chawinga wrote in an e-mailed response.

“This is one way of encouraging our athletes to continue working hard and excelling in different sporting fields. The event will be held early February and some of the disciplines to be honoured are athletics, basketball, best soldier, body-building, boxing, football, netball, shooting, taekwondo, volleyball and weight-lifting.”

He further called for potential sponsors to support the gala.

MDF has top teams and athletes such as Mafco Sisters netball club, boxers Wilson Masamba and Osgood Kayuni.

However, split allegiance between sports careers and core MDF duties undermine the performance of the institution’s athletes.

Players such as Gastin Simkonda have had their careers undermined by lengthy absence from the game after being posted to foreign missions in countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
