This year’s Malawi Defence Force (MDF) sports festival got a timely boost after National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma) Limited donated K5 million towards its organisation.

The festival is set for May 9 to 11 at Malawi Armed Forces College in Salima District.

Nocma Deputy Chief Executive Officer Helen Buluma said she was confident that the event would be a great success.

“MDF is a credible institution and we have great relations with it. We came in to help because we are confident that the money will be used for the intended purpose. We believe our contribution will help improve the athletes’ performance,” Buluma said.

MDF Chief Sports Officer in the Department of Sports and Culture Henderson Chilenga hailed Nocma for the timely assistance.

“We are very excited with Nocma’s support. We are now looking forward to hosting a successful event,” Chilenga said.

He then appealed to the corporate world to pour in more support to the event.

“Our budget for the event is K18 million and we only have K8 million. But we are optimistic that companies will support us. We want them to be part of this big event,” Chilenga said.

At the event, soldiers from all MDF units across the country will compete in various sports disciplines including football, netball, basketball, volleyball, boxing and athletics.

MDF regards the annual festival as a good platform for the soldiers to interact and network.

The military institution has top athletes in all sports disciplines and dominates most competitions across the country.
