Malawi, Egypt sign military pact

Malawi and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will see the two countries in military cooperation.

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) officials and officials from the Egyptian Ministry of Defence sealed the deal on August 16 this year.

The signing follows the increasing cooperation and interaction between the two armed forces in several activities of mutual interest in the past two years.

The areas of cooperation, according to the agreement, include military training in a number of specialised fields such as medicine, engineering and disaster mitigation.

In the agreement, there is also provision of equipment and exchange of military information and expertise.

The agreement establishes a joint military cooperation committee which will oversee the implementation of activities through annual plans of activities that the two parties will be agreeing on.

Until recently, the cooperation between the two armed forces has been informal and only focused on training in limited fields.

Speaking after the presentation of the conclusion of the MOU in Lilongwe on Monday, Deputy Minister of Defence, Vincent Ghambi, said both countries stand to benefit more from the agreement.

“Our soldiers will be able to acquire skills that are required to effectively perform their duties and be able to serve the nation effectively. Both countries will benefit as soldiers from our country will be going to Egypt to learn more from their Egyptian counterparts while Egyptian soldiers will also be coming here to learn some skills from our soldiers,” Ghambi said.

Egyptian Ambassador to Malawi Maher El-Adawy, said the agreement is a plus to the cooperation that the two countries already have in other fields such as agriculture, tourism and investment.

“Malawi will be able to learn from Egyptian Army which is one of the strongest army in Africa and this agreement is just one of the many fields that the two governments are already cooperating in. It will strengthen our relationship further,” El-Adawy said.

Egyptian Army is expected to assist towards building capacity for Malawi Defence Force to assist in infrastructure development. The Egyptian Armed Forces have a long history and experience in this field.
