Malawi government accuses former president Joyce Banda of lying on benefits
The Malawi Government says former President Joyce Banda is insincere in her claims that she is failing to return to the country due to the absence of retirement benefits.
In a statement dated November 14 but released on Wednesday November 25, Minister of Information, Tourism and Civic Education Jappie Mhango says the continued stay of the former President in foreign countries has nothing to do with victimisation or her retirement benefits.
The office of the former President has been citing government’s failure to provide security and accomodation as some of the reasons for Banda has delayed her return to Malawi.
Banda left the country soon after losing in the 2014 Tripartite General Elections and has since stayed away from Malawi citing lack of will and commitment on the part of the regime to accord her full retirement benefits.
Mhango says government has duly provided to Banda the requirements of a retired President as stipulated by the President’s (Salaries and Benefits) Act of 1994.
