Malawi government irks contractor in K37m VP house saga

Contractor who rehabilitated Vice President’s Area 12 house in Lilongwe is bitter with government for delayed payment, 11 months after the work was completed.

For some time, Vice President Saulos Chilima operated from his private home after elections as his official house had to undergo renovations.

The contractor, Kachulu Building Contractor, has slammed the Department of Buildings under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works for failing to authorise his payment from the Treasury.

Kachulu Building Contractor executive director, Hastings Kachulu, said he has been sued by suppliers for failing to pay them K18.1 million because of government’s failure to pay him his dues.

He said after completing the work in November 2014, the Building Department was supposed to inform the Treasury to authorise payment but, 11 months down the line, there is nothing tangible.

“The Building Department is the cause of all the suffering we are in. Every time we ask for the certificate they offer excuses. Nobody really knows what they want,” said Kachulu.

Director of Buildings, Hastings Chiudzu, while admitting that the payment certificate is yet to be processed, claimed that the contractor was paid all his dues.

“Currently government is in the process of agreeing a final account with the contractor. These discussions are on going and are within the validity period of concluding the same. Once this has been agreed a payment certificate shall be issued,“ said Chiudzu.
