Malawi government has commended The Times Group for being innovative and supporting the growth of media industry in the country.
Minister of Information, Tourism and Culture Kondwani Nankhumwa made the approval when he toured Times Television, Matindi FM studios and BNL Times newsroom in Blantyre on Wednesday.
Nankhumwa said the history of this country’s media industry cannot be complete without the mention of The Times Group.
“The Times Group is the oldest media house in the country and the company has grown from being a newspaper publishing media house only to something big. This is one of my familiarisation visits to different media organisations in the country and today I decided to take my time off to visit Times Group to appreciate what they are doing. To appreciate the investment they are putting into the media sector. They are coming up with several investments and innovations to take broadcasting industry in the country to another level,” Nankhumwa said.
He said he was aware that The Times Group has some challenges which will require government’s support.
“We had a long discussion with the management-close to two hours-where we looked at the challenges and successes. The government has undertaken that whatever they are doing should be supported and of course, we will come in to assist,” he said.
In the media sector alone, The Times Group owns Times Television, Matindi FM, Timescom and BNL Times which publishes The Daily Times, Malawi News and The Sunday Times newspapers.
