Malawi hockey team excites organisers

The return of Malawi Hockey National Team to the international stage has excited organisers of the inaugural African Hockey Federation (AfHF) President’s Cup.

Malawi, led by Coach Geoffrey Biya, travelled to Tanzania on Saturday ahead of the tournament which gets underway at Arusha Twigas Sports Club from Wednesday to Saturday.

In a statement, the Local Organising Committee and AfHF said they were excited with Malawi’s involvement in the competition.

“The AfHF is particularly excited to have Malawi back in competition and vying for continental honours again and is hopeful that the competition will trigger a wave of renewed interest in, and excitement towards, hockey in national associations in Eastern Africa,” reads part of the statement.

The newly introduced competition involves all national associations ranked below seven in Africa.

The winners of men and women’s categories will join top-seven ranked African nations for the 2017 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations to be held in South Africa from August 18 to 27.

Other teams involved in the competition are the hosts and Zambia.

Egyptian Ahmed Yousef is the tournament’s director with Nigerian Ediga Agbo overseeing refereeing.
