Malawi hopeful on UN General Assembly

country will benefit

Government says Malawi stands to benefit from the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (Unga) which President Lazarus Chakwera will attend via virtual conferencing.

While Covid-19 continues affecting businesses worldwide, this year’s Unga and other high-level meetings will be held on virtual platforms from September 21 to October 5.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Eisenhower Mkaka said it is not necessarily the mode of the meeting but resolutions passed that matter.

“United Nations General Assembly remains United Nations General Assembly. Even if there will be no physical interaction, the country will benefit in a number of ways from the meetings held and agreements made,” Mkaka said.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Chakwera will attend the General Debate of the General Assembly and a number of High-Level Meetings, including the 75th Anniversary Commemoration of the United Nations, the Biodiversity Summit and 25th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.

The statement adds that Chakwera will participate in a number of meetings to do with Least Developed Countries.

The theme for the 75th Session is ‘The Future We Want; the United Nations We Need: Reaffirming Our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism- Confronting Covid-19 Through Effective Multilateral Action’.

Mkaka said the multilateralism is key in the fight against Covid-19 and other social ills people face world over.

“The Tonse Alliance government is taking bilateral and multilateral relations seriously. This is why as Minister of Foreign Affairs, I have been in talks with my counterparts to try and restore good relationships. In the fight against Covid-19, and of course several other problems, we need to work together with other countries,” he said.

Last month, Chakwera also participated in the Southern African Development Community conference virtually.
