IMPRESSED— Officials read cholera-related messages

Officials from Malawi’s Nsanje and Mozambique’s Mutarara districts have called for collaboration in the fight against cholera.

They made the remarks at the weekend when officials from the two countries appreciated cholera prevention messages being disseminated in their border districts.

Nsanje District Commissioner (DC), Michael Chimbalanga, said the only solution to reduce cases of cholera infection was through collaboration.

Cholera outbreaks have, in recent times, hit some border districts in our countries because of poor coordination in the preventive aspect of the disease. Nsanje is a border district, which means it faces the risk of such (cholera) outbreaks whenever they hit Mozambique.

“I am happy, therefore, that we are working with our Mozambican counterparts to tackle the disease.” Chimbalanga said.

Nsanje District Health Officer, Alexander Chijuwa, said he was satisfied with levels of collaboration between officials from the two countries.

“Though the relationship is in its initial stage, we have made strides in implementing cholera preventive initiatives. With support from United Nations Children’s Fund through United Purpose, Nsanje District Social Mobilisation Committee has managed to disseminate cholera prevention messages in high-risk areas,” he said.

The initiative has also involved traditional leaders.

Mozambique’s Traditional Authority Dobvu was part of the Mozambican delegation and said, working in collaboration with health officials, traditional leaders were playing an active role in stemming cholera cases.
