Malawi netballers fail in Tanzania
Three local netballers quietly left the country two weeks ago to help a Tanzanian team called Uhamiaji during that country’s provisional championship but ended up failing to win the title.
Thunder Queens’ goal shooter, Emily Jere, and Civonets duo of Brenda Lwanda and Beauty Nyangulu featured for Uhamiaji during the tournament.
The trio is expected back in the country this week.
Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) General Secretary, Carol Bapu, said the three were cleared to feature for the Tanzanian side.
“It was a short term clearance. We could not object to the move for various factors. It gives a chance to our players to gain exposure by playing in a different environment.
“Such a move would also strengthen netball ties between Tanzania and Malawi. We have made it a tradition to send players to Tanzania every year,” Bapu said.
Thunder Queens Coach, Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji, said Jere had the team’s blessings for the Tanzania trip.
“It is now a norm that every year, our Tanzanian counterparts ask players from Thunder and other teams to feature for their sides. We cannot object to such an arrangement because it is a win-win situation,” Mkwanda- Nsinji said.
