Malawi had brilliant starts to their T20 matches against Mozambique Wednesday as the men’s and ladies’ cricket sides triumphed in their first games.

For the ladies, it was history in the making as they played their first-ever international match while the men’s side also made history by playing its maiden match in Lilongwe.

Playing at St Andrews International High School in Blantyre, the ladies’ team won by 77 runs with Tadala Mpandakwaya scoring the most runs at 28.

Malawi Captain, Triphonia Luna, emerged the best bowler after taking three wickets for seven runs.

Team Manager, Carolyn Behan, said Malawi had a great first day and hoped for better results in today’s action.

“We won by 4 wickets. It was a brilliant showing by the women’s team. The players performed as if they had played international matches before, yet this was their first. We are encouraged with their performance,” Behan said.

It was also a memorable day for Malawi’s men as they also won by three wickets at Lilongwe Golf Club.

The two teams were engaged in more action yesterday evening at both venues as we went to bed.

Mozambique arrived on Tuesday for the matches which have been sanctioned by International Cricket Council.

The ladies are scheduled to play seven matches with the men playing four games in Lilongwe before moving to Blantyre for three more encounters.

The men’s teams will first play two T20 games at Indian Sports Club, with the last match earmarked for St. Andrews.
