Malawi Olympic Committee boss in African Games

By Ronald Mpaso:

KANJALA—It is about Malawi

Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President, Oscar Kanjala, has been appointed to the Coordination Committee of the 12th African Games scheduled for August this year in Morocco.

Kanjala, who is also Council of southern African National Olympic Committees Vice President, will be working with the Local Organising Committee in ensuring the smooth running of the continental showpiece.

Among other assignments, the Moc boss will be responsible for accreditation and visas, international transport, sports entries, chef de mission meetings, results management and the competition’s appeals committee.

Kanjala said he felt humbled with the appointment and promised to represent the country well in the committee.

“The appointment is not just about Kanjala. It is about Malawi and I will work hard for the sake of my country. It is a great honour and privilege to be part of this initiative which will develop a spirit of respect and Olympism among young athletes of the region,” he said.

Kanjala said the Games encourage young sports persons to develop towards stages where they can, in future, represent their nations and the whole region.

Meanwhile, Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa has taken over organisation of the Games from the African Union effective this year.

Kanjala said the development has seen the competition change its name from All Africa Games to African Games.

He said the Games will be used as a qualifying tournament for Olympics for most sports disciplines, hence according better qualification chances to more African athletes.

“Under the new setup, African athletes will be qualifying for the Olympic Games without having to travel long distances outside the continent. They will be qualifying for the Olympics within their own continent,” Kanjala said.

He said the new arrangement will make qualification cheaper for athletes on the continent as they will cut down on travel expenses for the Olympics.
