The mist surrounding this year’s Malawi Open Tennis Championship has been cleared.

Ltam General Secretary, Stan Kaunda, said the three-day championship will be staged at Malawi National Tennis Centre situated at Country Club Limbe, Blantyre.

Kaunda said they have secured sponsorship from Puma Energy, Lube Masters, Mibawa Studios and Illovo Sugar.

“The wait is over. Players can now start their preparations with focus. We are thankful to Lube Masters, Mibawa Studios and Illovo Sugar for joining Puma Malawi energy in supporting this year’s championship. This is the seventh successive year that Puma Energy is supporting tennis,” he said.

Kaunda said Ltam has sent invitations to associations from neighbouring countries such as Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique to allow the players to compete in the Malawi Open.

Despite the absence of several international players, last year’s championship left an indelible mark.

Impressive Italian, Egon Tascher, who is a volunteer based in Mzuzu, and Malawian, Mary Luhanga, won titles in their respective categories.

Tascher defeated Malawian, James Matewere, 6-3 6-1 6-3 to win the men’s section of the championship whereas Luhanga overcame rival, Patricia Matola- Mlomba, 7-6 3-6 6-2 to lift the ladies’ singles.

Over 50 players took part in last year’s competition
