The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry.

These awards are regarded as the most famous and prestigious awards in the entertainment industry.

Given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are an international recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements, as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership.

The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, although more commonly referred to by its nickname, the Oscar. The statuette depicts a knight rendered in the Art Deco style.

According to the Malawi Oscars Selection Committee, the call for Malawian entries is for Best International Feature Film.

“An International Feature Film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (over 40 minutes long) produced outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. Animated and documentary feature films are permitted,” reads a statement from the committee.

Meanwhile the committee has indicated that the closing date for submissions is November 2 2020 at 16:00hrs.

The Malawi Oscars Selection also says in a statement that the committee will choose one film as the country’s official submission for the International Feature Film category.

Among others, the eligibility of the film entails that, it must be first released in Malawi no earlier than October 1, 2019, and no later than December 31, 2020, and that it must be first publicly exhibited for at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theatre for the profit of the producer and exhibitor.
