For the first time this year, Malawian firms participated in the annual innovative construction awards and expo in Nirobi, Kenya. The event was sponsored by global cement manufacturing company, LafargeHolcim.
The awards are the most significant in sustainable design and takes place across five geographical regions, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific.
Through the awards, which were launched in 2003, LafargeHolcim has been promoting and rewarding sustainability in construction worldwide.
Malawi was, for the first time this year, represented at the ceremony by the Malawi Institute of Architects and Rab Group of Companies.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, president of the Malawi Institute of Architects, Miliam Mdoko, said the forum was an opportunity for Malawi to tap into recent global construction trends.
“We are focusing on innovation and sustainability within the construction industry in Malawi. This forum is ideal for the advancement of the sector back home,” Mdoko said.
In a separate interview, Rab Group of Companies General Manager, Bashir Sama, said participating in the event would help local participants acquire knowledge to help boost the sector.
“The forum will help us to understand the impact of the construction industry in Malawi and see how to grow it further. It will also bring more awareness,” he said.
Lafarge Cement Malawi Commercial Manager, Hilary Mkulichi, said the forum as a training ground for the local participants.
“Stakeholders will appreciate the competitiveness of the sector, at both the regional and global levels and we thought that, if we do not engage them, we would be missing out on a lot of opportunities,” Mkulichi said.
