Malawi Police officers urged to be professional
The Police in the Southern Region have embarked on drilling its officers in customer care and confidence building to improve their working relationship with the community.
Southern Region Community Policing Coordinator, Alex Simenti, said a bad working relationship between the two parties can culminate into serious violent acts.
Simenti made the remarks over the weekend when he addressed police officers at Bangwe Police Sub-station in Blantyre.
“The initiative is aimed at reminding police officers to uphold professionalism and improve customer care and security service delivery. Be disciplined and have confidence so that whatever you do must reflect the good image of police officers.
“Avoid corrupt practices because those that will entertain the vice will be punished accordingly. And make sure that those that are trying to bribe you are prosecuted,” advised Simenti.
One of the police officers at Bangwe Police Sub-station, Tambilai Mungayele, was full of praise for the initiative, saying it will enhance the working relationship between police officers and the general public in the provision of better security services.
So far the exercise has already been conducted at Bvumbwe, Chilomoni, and Chilombwe police sub-stations.
In 2015, an angry mob torched Chilomoni Police Sub-station on allegations that a police officer killed one of the community members. Meanwhile, the Central Region is said to be the worst affected by vandalism where, among others, police infrastructure at Area 23, Mitundu, Kamwendo police stations were vandalised.
