Malawi Posts Corporation loses K500 million per year

By Isaac Salima:

Malawi Posts Corporation (MPC) has said it is losing at least K500 million per year due to non-profitability of some of its post offices.

Post Master General, Henry Shamu, said the corporation has 180 post offices, of which only 30 are making profits.

Speaking when Information and Technology Minister Mark Botomani visited the corporation Wednesday, Shamu said, to broaden its revenue base, the institution was expanding its courier and transport business.

He said MPC had procured seven buses.

“We have to be innovative in order to remain relevant on the market; hence, the purchase of the buses, which will start operating next month.

“We hope that our services will be unique because we will be able to deliver mails same day and offer customers comfortable travel,” Shamu said.

He said the company was introducing a digital mobile money system dubbed Zaphcash, where customers will be able to transact digitally.

In his remarks, Botomani commended the corporation for casting the net wider.

He, however, challenged the firm to be business-minded.

“Most of the services MPC has been providing have been taken over by the changing world; so, I have also asked management to be business-minded. We hope that with the robust commercial directorate that, they have, they will be on top of the game,” Botomani said.
